Inter-state talks on Tummidihatti barrage conclude on positive note

Hyderabad: The Central Water Commission CWC sponsored inter state talks between Telangana and Maharashtra over the proposed Tummidihatti barrage across the Pranahita River concluded on a positive note on Tuesday, September 1, 2026, raising hopes of resolving long pending issues.

CWC Chairman Anupam Prasad chaired the session, which extensively discussed Telangana proposal to construct the barrage at a Full Reservoir Level FRL of 152 metres, consequent submergence in Maharashtra, Pranahita water availability, and necessary safeguards for both states.

The Telangana delegation comprised Irrigation Advisor Adityanath Das, Irrigation Secretary E Sridhar, Engineer in Chief General OV Ramesh Babu, and senior technical officials. Maharashtra was represented by two key project officials. Although no final decision was taken, deliberations were described as constructive and encouraging. Another round of discussions is likely in the third week of September.

A major focus was Maharashtra concern over submergence caused by the proposed 152 metre FRL. Telangana presented technical studies maintaining that additional submergence from increasing the level from 148 metres to 152 metres would be marginal and addressable through technical safeguards.

CWC Chairman Anupam Prasad directed Telangana to share detailed submergence data and supporting studies with Maharashtra technical authorities before the next meeting, to which Telangana agreed.

Each step names the agent that ran it, the method it used and the version of the rules or model behind it. A step describing what it did not find is recorded on the same footing as one that found something, so that gaps in the analysis are visible rather than absent.
